Behind the Scenes of the Bond Home: An Indian River Interior Design Project, Part II

Return with us to the Indian River interior design project, recently completed as a seasonal residence for a Northern couple looking for a home that is equally suited for work and play. As mentioned in the first installment of this series, this home features great 1960’s architecture and a front row seat to the Indian River canal.

Along with major structural updates, the home needed an interior design makeover to match the modern taste and functional needs of the homeowner. In addition to the updates and modifications discussed in the first part of this article series, more major changes lay in store.

Bringing the Outdoors In

When planning an Indian River interior designer project, it’s really all about capturing the ambiance and natural beauty of coastal Florida. As mentioned, the Bond home is situated on the Indian River canal, and it was important to the design team to find a way to bring the outdoors in.

The existing open concept living room led out to a covered patio and pool area, but the space lacked the true feeling of bringing the outdoors in. A 16-foot sliding door wall completely transformed the space into an indoor-outdoor living area—perfect for year-round entertaining. The oversized tiles from the interior spill out onto the paved patio, further enhancing the feeling that this spacious area is a natural extension of the home.

Back inside, a small den isolated from the main living area was set free by knocking down the wall separating it from the rest of the home. The space was then transformed into a full bar and sitting area with chic accents and functional components. For instance, a fireplace (infrequently used in central Florida) was replaced with bar essentials like a wine cooler and icemaker for entertaining.

The team commissioned Bryson Gainey to create a custom room divider that brings an element of fun to the space. The design was inspired by the geometric pattern from accent wallpaper on the TV wall. The end result is a defined sitting space that isn’t isolated from the rest of the home but provides a perfect place to mix and mingle.

Speaking of the TV wall, this chic home isn’t without a cozy spot to relax and unwind. An inviting oversized sofa squares off against a TV floating against a pop of geometric wallpaper. Modern accents, like the sleek propeller fan and arched globe light keep the space in step with the rest of the home’s décor.

Fresh New Style for an Indian River Kitchen

The kitchen was a total transformation in this Indian River interior design project, and a favorite feature of our team. The dated and drab kitchen needed a complete renovation and the inspiration from the outdoors guided the way.

The team wanted to bring elements from the outdoors in, such as the reflection on the water of the Indian River canal. To capture this, the finishes in the kitchen have a very reflective quality. As a result, the space feels more open and brighter while allowing maximum lighting to course through the main living area. A painted glass back-splash is a unique option that brings a seamless pop of color to the overall neutral backdrop of the interior. The soothing sea green is a soft echo of the coastal Florida color palette.

A waterfall counter island transitions the kitchen into the living area. For the counter and island, we chose beautiful Cambria quartz counter tops that nod to the aesthetic of the original Terrazzo floors.
